The exact tools, pans, flours, and reads I reach for ā organized so you can shop by what you're trying to do. (Sample picks shown now; real links go live once our Amazon Associates account is set up.)
“Flour Water Salt Yeast” – Ken Forkish
The book that finally made hydration percentages and timing click for me.
“Tartine Bread” – Chad Robertson
A gorgeous, deeper dive once you're past the basics and want to refine your technique.
5.5-Qt Enameled Dutch Oven
What I bake every loaf in - the tight lid traps steam for a crackly crust with zero fuss.
Banneton Liners, Set of 2
Slides into a proofing basket to keep dough from sticking. Flour it first - it's not a flour-free fix, just an easier release when the loaf comes out.
Bench Scraper / Dough Cutter
For dividing, shaping, and scraping down a sticky work surface without a fight.
Bread Lame + Replacement Blades
For clean, confident scoring - the difference between a torn top and a proper "ear."
Danish Dough Whisk
A curved wire whisk that brings shaggy dough together without it clumping all over a spoon. A regular wooden spoon does the same job - this is purely a convenience upgrade.
Digital Kitchen Scale (1g precision)
Baking by weight is the single biggest upgrade for consistent results - this is the one on my counter.
Fine Sea Salt (Baker’s Salt)
Fine grain dissolves evenly into dough - no gritty pockets of salt in your crumb.
Fine-Mesh Flour Sifter
For dusting flour evenly over a loaf or work surface before scoring. Sprinkling flour straight from your hand or through a small strainer works just fine too.
Glass Mixing Bowl Set
For bringing shaggy dough together before it hits the counter. Glass or plastic, any size you've already got works fine - this is just a sturdy set if you need one.
Instant-Read Digital Thermometer
Checking internal temp (200-210Ā°F) is the most reliable way to know a loaf is actually done.
King Arthur Bread Flour, 5lb
The protein content that gives sourdough its structure - I keep this stocked at all times.
Pre-Cut Parchment Paper Sheets
Makes transferring dough into a hot Dutch oven far less stressful and saves you a stuck-loaf disaster. Ready-to-go sheets - no cutting a roll to size.
Rattan Proofing Basket (Banneton Set)
Gives your loaf that classic spiral pattern and keeps a wet dough from spreading while it proofs.
Reusable Shower Cap (2-Pack)
Covers dough while it ferments on the counter, before it goes into the proofing basket. A plain, cheap shower cap does the job and can be reused as long as it's clean.
Sourdough Starter Kit Bundle
Jar, scraper, and banneton together - the exact starter kit I'd hand a beginner.
Stand Mixer
Not needed for sourdough bread - hand-mixing is genuinely part of the process - but handy if you also bake enriched doughs, bagels, or cookies.
The New Baker’s Gift Bundle
A curated set for anyone just starting out - everything in one cart, ready to gift.
Whole Rye Flour (for feeding starters)
A spoonful in your feeding routine gives a sluggish starter a real boost of activity.
